Of mountains and song …

Psalm 98_8 2

Some blue skies had managed to sneak their way through the clouds. There was hope that we would get the view we had been promised. But as we wound our way past strawberry fields and waterfalls, the clouds descended, the heavens opened and rain was the order of the day. Crossing the mountainside on switchbacks through the cloud and rain, we were suddenly stopped, the road too dangerous for us to continue with two lanes of traffic. Arriving at our destination, all was covered. A lookout with water rushing below and nothing but cloud and fog. The view completely obscured.

It was one of those oh well moments. There’s not much you can do when the skies open up overhead. But on the way back, the rain slowly stopped. The clouds lifted. The view that opened up in front of us took my breath away.

Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together of joy; let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity. Psalm 98:7-9 (NIV)

Let the sea and its fish give a round of applause, With everything living on earth joining in. Let ocean breakers call out, “Encore!” And mountains harmonize the finale – A tribute to God when he comes, When he comes to set the earth right. He’ll straighten out the whole world, He’ll put the world right, and everyone in it. Psalm 98:7-9 (MSG)

I know I am called to praise my God. To sing to Him the worship overflowing from my soul. But the mountains – they sing. They sing boldly. The waterfalls roar their praise as water surges over cliffs. There was no possible way I could praise my God louder than His creation was praising Him. The beauty that He has made is a testament to His creativity. To His power. To His tenderness. To His love. Songs flooded my soul and my heart poured out worship to God.

If the mountains and rivers sing like that, I want in on that celebration too. His beauty on full display in all that He has made. How great is my God!
